Robert Bell, Ph.D.

Bob joined Intersouth Partners in 2001. He founded Sphinx Pharmaceuticals, Intersouth's first biotechnology investment, in 1988. A professor at Duke University Medical Center, he served as chairman of the scientific advisory board and a member of the board of directors of Sphinx Pharmaceuticals until its acquisition by Eli Lilly in 1994. Before joining Intersouth, he served as Vice President of Research at Glaxo Wellcome.

Prior to joining Glaxo Wellcome in 1995, Bob was at Duke University Medical Center, where he founded and chaired the Department of Molecular Cancer Biology. He also served as deputy director and acting director of the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center. Bob was a James B. Duke Professor of Biochemistry and Professor of Medicine. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology.

Bob received the first Avanti Award from the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 1996 for his seminal contributions in lipid biochemistry. He has served on numerous advisory boards including the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, The V Foundation for Cancer Research and Keystone. He was an Established Investigator of the American Heart Association. Bob received his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California at Berkeley. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Washington University School of Medicine.
