Hendrick Health System Deploys Sentillion’s Tap & Go Advanced Authentication Solution
ANDOVER, MA -July 21, 2009 – Hendrick Health System, a major healthcare network in Abilene that serves the Texas Midwest area, finished its implementation of Sentillion’s Tap & Go(TM) solution, which leverages passive proximity cards for advanced authentication. Following its enterprise roll-out of Sentillion’s single sign-on solution (SSO), Hendrick Health System purchased Tap & Go to enable caregivers in its trauma center to use their facility access cards to instantly sign on to any workstation on the floor as needed.
“Tap & Go has been a welcome addition to the trauma center where the desire for quick access often led caregivers to circumvent sign-on delays by sharing the same user password,” said Duane Donaway, director of technology for Hendrick Health System. “We nearly had some difficulties with our trauma physicians when we tried to enforce compliancy with mandatory screen savers and password protection procedures. Leveraging Tap & Go, they log on once at the beginning of their shift and then tap any workstation on the floor to instantly gain access to the information they need.”
With Sentillion’s unique Tap & Go solution, a caregiver initially uses a badge for identification and then enters a password or provides another verifiable artifact such as a fingerprint biometric. Once authenticated, a “grace period” is established during which the caregiver can subsequently log on to the same workstation or any other workstation simply by tapping a badge. The caregiver can also tap to authorize certain actions, such as ordering a medication, and may tap to log off. Upon expiration of the grace period, the caregiver simply re-enters the password to initiate a new grace period. The duration of the grace period is controlled by IT administrators.
Hendrick Health System first partnered with Sentillion to provide SSO capabilities to its 1,500 caregivers. At that time, the clinical and administrative staffs were extremely frustrated with the number of passwords they needed to remember in order to access all the clinical and business software applications, including Eclipsys, which they used during their shift. Hendrick Health System’s IT team was also particularly focused on security and making sure it was in compliance with regulations governing application access and patient records. Through its implementation of SSO, the health system has improved information access and has virtually eliminated calls to the help desk from caregivers who have forgotten their passwords. The introduction of Tap & Go further streamlines caregivers’ access to their system by providing a secure but fast alternative to the need to key-in a password for every log-on.
